Inversions (Hardly, No sooner...)

En anglais formel/littéraire, certaines expressions négatives ou restrictives en début de phrase entraînent une inversion sujet-auxiliaire :

- Hardly / Scarcely / Barely + had + sujet + PP + when...

- No sooner + had + sujet + PP + than...

- Not only + auxiliaire + sujet...

- Little + did + sujet + verbe...

- Not until + ... + auxiliaire + sujet + verbe...

- On no account + auxiliaire + sujet + verbe...

• Hardly had he arrived when the phone rang. — À peine était-il arrivé que le téléphone sonna.
• No sooner had we left than it started raining. — À peine étions-nous partis qu'il s'est mis à pleuvoir.
• Not only was he late, but he also forgot the documents. — Non seulement il était en retard, mais il avait aussi oublié les documents.
• Little did she know what was about to happen. — Elle ne savait absolument pas ce qui allait se passer.
