Conditionnel 2 (If I were...)

Le conditionnel 2 (ou « second conditional ») exprime une situation irréelle ou hypothétique au présent.

Structure : If + past simple, would + base verbale

Particularité : avec be, on utilise were pour toutes les personnes (pas 'was') dans un style correct :

→ If I were you... / If she were here...

À ne pas confondre avec le conditionnel 1 (if + present, will + base) qui est une situation probable.

• If I were you, I would accept the offer. — Si j'étais toi, j'accepterais l'offre. (conseil irréel)
• If I had more time, I would travel more. — Si j'avais plus de temps, je voyagerais plus. (souhait irréel)
• If she spoke French, she would get the job. — Si elle parlait français, elle obtiendrait le poste. (hypothèse)
• What would you do if you won the lottery? — Que ferais-tu si tu gagnais au loto ? (situation imaginaire)
