Direct vs Reported Speech

Direct: She said, "I am tired."

Reported: She said (that) she was tired.

Tense Changes

• Present Simple → Past Simple: "I work" → He said he worked
• Present Continuous → Past Continuous: "I am working" → He said he was working
• Past Simple → Past Perfect: "I worked" → He said he had worked
• Will → Would: "I will go" → He said he would go
• Can → Could: "I can swim" → He said he could swim

Reporting Verbs

said, told, asked, explained, suggested, promised, warned, admitted, denied, claimed

Reported Questions

"Where do you live?" → She asked me where I lived.

"Are you coming?" → She asked me if I was coming.
