Defining vs Non-Defining Relative Clauses
Defining (Essential Info)
No commas. The clause identifies which person/thing we mean.
- The man who lives next door is a teacher. (which man? the one next door)
- The book that I bought is interesting.
Non-Defining (Extra Info)
WITH commas. The clause adds extra, non-essential information.
- My brother, who lives in London, is visiting us. (I only have one brother)
- Paris, which is the capital of France, is beautiful.
