Defining vs Non-Defining Relative Clauses

Defining (Essential Info)

No commas. The clause identifies which person/thing we mean.

  • The man who lives next door is a teacher. (which man? the one next door)
  • The book that I bought is interesting.

Non-Defining (Extra Info)

WITH commas. The clause adds extra, non-essential information.

  • My brother, who lives in London, is visiting us. (I only have one brother)
  • Paris, which is the capital of France, is beautiful.

Relative Pronouns

  • who — people (subject)
  • whom — people (object, formal)
  • which — things
  • that — people/things (defining only)
  • whose — possession
  • where — places
  • when — times
