Active vs Passive Voice

Active: The cat ate the fish. (focus on WHO did it)

Passive: The fish was eaten by the cat. (focus on WHAT happened)

Structure

Subject + be (conjugated) + past participle (+ by agent)

Tense Examples

  • Present: English is spoken worldwide.
  • Past: The house was built in 1920.
  • Future: The report will be finished tomorrow.
  • Present Perfect: The email has been sent.
  • Modal: This can be done easily.

When to Use Passive

  • The agent is unknown: "My bike was stolen."
  • The action is more important: "The vaccine was developed in 2020."
  • Formal/scientific writing: "The data were analyzed."
