The Three English Articles

A / An — Indefinite Articles

Use a before consonant sounds: a cat, a book, a university (sounds like "yoo").

Use an before vowel sounds: an apple, an hour (silent h), an umbrella.

The — Definite Article

Use the when referring to something specific:

  • The sun is shining. (there's only one sun)
  • Pass me the salt. (the specific salt on the table)
  • The book you recommended is great.

No Article (Zero Article)

  • General plural nouns: Dogs are loyal.
  • Uncountable nouns: Water is essential.
  • Names: Paris is beautiful.
